In early May 2017, Lois Slemp was awarded a record-breaking $110.5 million lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson by the Virginia jury for her claim that she got ovarian cancer due to the use of their talcum powder for 40 years. She is one of the many who fight against this carcinogenic product. Currently, more than 2,000 Americans seek justice, in order to unmask these harmful products.
At the moment, Lois Slemp is struggling with cancer, which has spread to the liver. The case of Lois Slemp followed the victory of the late Jackie Fox of Alabama, whose family won a $72 million lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson last year, for their claim that the long-term use of their products caused her death by ovarian cancer.

Allen Smith, the attorney of Lois Slemp, in the opening remarks to the jury, said: “This case is about corporate profit and maintaining a corporate image over human life. That’s what this case is about. And your verdict could prevent potentially hundreds of thousands of women from contracting one of the most deadly forms of cancer.”

He added:“Baby Powder and Shower to Shower contain 3 carcinogens: they contain talc, which is a carcinogen, they contain asbestos, which is a known carcinogen, and they contain heavy metals, which are carcinogens… the defendants [Johnson & Johnson] cannot say today that those products are asbestos-free.”

“The defendants have known about this for 40 years- 4 decades. J & J mines its talc in China. They are known to have impurities in these mines and they do this in an effort to cut costs.Tens of thousands of women have been affected by the genital use of these products and the development of ovarian cancer.”

A witness in this case, as well as the case of the late Jackie Fox, Dr. Daniel Cramer, emphasized the relationship between the long-term use of talcum powder and cancer. He found that the use of talcum powder in the genital area has led to cancer since the 1980’s.
He asked Johnson & Johnson to label their products and wrote that he studied this issue for decades, and found:“For women who use talcum powder on a regular basis, there was a 30% increased risk for ovarian cancer.”
Shower to Shower is marketed as a safe product for daily use, for both, women and men.
According to its web page  “SHOWER to SHOWER® can be used all over your body” and you should “Sprinkle on problem areas to soothe skin that has been irritated from friction. Apply after a bikini wax to help reduce irritation and discomfort.”
The page of the Baby Powder states the following:“We continue to use talc in our products because decades of science have reaffirmed its safety. Because of its safety and effectiveness, we confidently include pharmaceutical grade talc in our products.”
Yet, researchers have found the opposite, so make sure you are on the safe side and stay away from known and suspected carcinogens. Instead, you can use the following natural and safe alternatives to relieve irritations, soften the skin, and remove bad body odors:

  • Baking soda

  • Corn starch

  • Natural homemade deodorants

  • Talc-free Powders such as Burt’s Bees Dusting Powder
